Planning Ahead, Jan. 2022 Blog

In the December Blog, I challenged you to define who you are and to think about how that differs from others who have defined you. It is not the critic who counts and when you let others define who you are, they are winning, and you are losing. You need to take a moment and think about where you are now and where you would like to be.

If you want to live a braver, bolder, more vulnerable, and more courageous life, you will need to get out of your own way. If you want to show up positively every day, you need to change your inner and outer behaviors by coaching your way through barriers that prevent you from the change you desire.

Ask yourself if no changes are made, what do you think you will be like in three years or ten years from now? What would be the worst-case scenario? If you make significant behavior changes, what do you think you will be like three years or ten years from now. What would be the best-case scenario?

This month, January, you are challenged to identify the narrow areas of your life. These are the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that get in your way. You are asked to be proactive and spend a reasonable amount of time acknowledging and addressing the fears and feelings (the wastelands) that show up every time you decide to make a change. Connect these fears and feelings to experiences perpetrated on you or by you. Put these fears and feelings in the appropriate context. If some of your drama and trauma are from an early age, then don't look at these incidents through the eyes of a child but as the wiser more mature person you are today. Don't be defined by setbacks, disappointments, and failures. Don't waste your time and energy on shame and blame. Have that difficult conversation with yourself. Be accountable and learn from your past experiences.

You were also challenged this month to identify the treasures in your life. Identify events where you courageously showed up through the discomfort of difficult times. Explore your strengths, self-knowledge and past experiences and make a list. These are examples of the treasures in your life.  Remember the times you showed up in difficult circumstances and brought your whole self and whole heart and were able to innovate, solve problems, connect, and truly care. Remember the times you took a deep breath and said to yourself "job well done". Remember when you took time to connect your heart and body by practicing self-love. Practicing self-love is a way of allowing yourself the pleasures of accomplishment, and joy.
